Germany's record in 2006/07 has marked them out as strong contenders to win the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
Kroos hat-trick
Even before the qualifying round, Germany had hit form, bouncing back from a 2-0 defeat by the Netherlands in September with a 4-0 defeat of Qatar and 4-1 win against Italy. That impressive streak continued in the qualifying round in October in Georgia, starting with a 7-1 victory against F.Y.R. Macedonia in which Toni Kroos grabbed a hat-trick and Kevin Wolze, Marvin Knoll, Patrick Funk, Sascha Bigalke and Dennis Dowidat also scored. Funk scored on 68 minutes two days later to ensure a 1-0 defeat of Georgia, and holders Russia were then dispatched 3-1 as Germany came from behind with goials from Eric Tappiser, Funk and Kroos.
Algarve success
After the winter break, Germany hit the ground running as they won February's Algarve Tournament, beating France 2-0, drawing 1-1 with Portugal and then recovering from a half-time deficit to see off England 3-1. So the scene was set for the Elite round on home soil, and it was a superb display from Germany.
Record performance
First Greece were defeated 4-1, Kroos scoring twice in the first 15 minutes and Henning Sauerbier and Richard Sukuta-Pasu adding further goals late on. That result was repeated against Scotland, this time Bigalke, Wolze, Sukuta-Pasu and Knoll on target. They only needed a draw against the Republic of Ireland, but in the second half Bigalke converted a penalty and Knoll scored twice in the last two minutes to complete the best team record since the Elite round began in 2002/03, all three games played in front of sell-out crowds that totalled more than 18,000.
